Begin the Begin: eMusic Purcha$e$, January 11-February 10, 2009

Hello, good morning/afternoon/evening, and welcome to the first post of pppurcha$e$. This is a barebones blog where I will post lists with links to music I have purchased from vendors such as Amazon, iTunes, Not Lame, CD Baby, and especially eMusic. We are still benefiting this month from the excellent Best of 2008 lists of such luminaries as Steve at Absolute Powerpop and David Bash, both eagerly awaited by powerpoppers galaxy-wide. Powerpoppers will want to pay special attention to the songs below by Big Kid, Graham Day And The Gaolers, The Hi-Risers, Junebug, The Pranks, Pris, The Resonars, Three Hour Tour, and The Warm Fuzzies. That Spiraling song is a doozy, too. Indiepoppers might take note of A.C. Newman, I Was a King, The Manhattan Love Suicides, Marching Band, Soda Fountain Rag, The Raveonettes, and We Should Be Dead. But of course, I like them all. A problem inherent in buying new stuff from 30-second samples is not being able to hear the all-important hookery that launches a song. Rest assured there is plenty to ensnare you, especially in the powerpop tunes. Click Artist-LP names to go to the eMusic page for sampling/buying/hanging out. Something that might make this process easier: hit Ctrl-N (Command-N on a Mac) to launch a new window. Then drag the two windows side by side so when you go to eMusic, you'll still be able to see the song titles I've bought/recommended. Only a suggestion.

  2. wow, that's quite a list here!! thanks for doing this, it will help me bulk up my emusic "save for later" list!

btw, the Attic Lights song "Bring You Down" is a bit different on the comp you list than the single/album version. and if you're like me and CAN'T wait for the US release, you can purchase the mp3s here:

  3. This is a great idea! I have a 75-song monthly subscription to Emusic and there have actually been times when I didn't use up all of it because I just didn't know what was out there. I am definitely going to bookmark this blog and check it regularly. Thanks.

  4. This is very cool. Blue Aeroplanes! Haven't thought about them in a long time. Didn't we see them open for the Church?

  5. Fabulous idea here. I've been enjoying some great eMusic finds as well. I've picked up a few things there that I let slip through my hands 25-30 years ago.

Any Trouble - Where Are All the Nice Girls
    The Individuals - Fields/Aquamarine
    Pylon - Gyrate Plus
    Flamin' Groovies - Slow Death

    Recent pick ups include:
    The Speedies - Speedy Delivery
The Gourds - Haymaker (Yep Roc is my new fave label)
    Shoes - Fret Buzz
Paul Collins Beat - Ribbon of Gold
Julie Ocean - Long Gone and Nearly There

Also available there, the classic Drums Along the Hudson by the Bongos. I bought the CD before it came available on eMusic.

  6. Thanks to you'uns for your comments and encouragement. I'm glad you're finding the new blog useful. Curty Ray, the work's lighter if people appreciate it. lauree, I heard about Attic Lights in the first place from you on the Audities list, so thanks. And I got the fabulous Dropkick from your playlists at last.fm, so thanks again. I also got some great finds poring over your Downloads at eMusic, so ta again. Anon, I know just what you mean. Sometimes those last few days before the monthly deadline can almost become a job. What's worse were the couple of times early in my eMusic subscription when I didn't realize that the month's deadline had already passed. Chad, I thought of you when I came across the Blue Aeroplanes again. I've still got the vinyl but am happy to have some mp3s. You might well be right about their opening for The Church. Oh, what a night! Thanks so much, E-Mann for the recommendations! Now that's exactly what I'm hoping for, both here and at Powerpopulist. I heard a couple of Any Trouble songs on my walk tonight, including an excellent cover of Springsteen's "Growing Up." (Actually, I like it better than the Boss's.) I've long liked Pylon, Flamin' Groovies, Shoes, Paul Collins Beat, and the Bongos and within the past year met up musically with the wonderful Julie Ocean. I look forward, though, to checking on the specific albums you've mentioned and also checking out the other groups you named. I've read about The Gourds in the Austin paper for years but haven't yet checked them out, but will now. Again, thanks, ya'll!
